Google’s Latest PageRank Update! – The Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs Ranked
Posted on December 31st, 2008 by Jim under Announcements, Blog Services, Observations
It’s official!
While you were away, Google brought webmasters their own Christmas present in the form of the Fourth Quarter 2008 PageRank Update! Many bloggers, marketers and web geeks alike wait for Google PageRank (“PR”) updates religiously, and for good reason. A high PR can send your blog to the top of search engine rankings, get you much more easily indexed, and help you rake in a lot more dough from advertisers who like to see high numbers. Don’t let anyone tell you that PageRank ain’t important, because it can really drive your website’s success.
So what happened to me? This round of Google PageRank updates was pretty solid overall. TheNetFool.com got upgraded from a PR 3 to a PR 4… though I already had a PR 4 back in May of 2008, before getting downgraded to a PR 3 in the fall. At any rate, that is solid news. On related websites, BullishBankers.com (my stock market community) received the bump up from a PR 3 to a PR 4… not bad for a website that’s only been around for 6 months. During the Q2 PageRank Updates, I reviewed the new ratings and how I felt they were relative to what I felt these blogs deserved. Today, we redo this process with 100 of the top MMO blogs on the internet.
The Net Fool’s Top 100 MMO “Fair Value” Rankings
Because of the constant ranting on how “unfair” Google’s Pagerank service is, I decided to pull from the top 100 “Make Money Online” websites on the internet (according to the leading Top 100 list), and put the new PR rankings to the test. Below, you will find a list of these blogs, their new Pagerank as of December 31st 2008, and their The Net Fool “Fair Value” ranking. You can call this a little “surprise” for Google… just thanking them for the PR upgrade by throwing 100+ links around!

Whew! That’s one heck of a list, eh? Again, if your site is listed here as “overvalued” it doesn’t mean that I don’t like you… it’s simply an indication that I feel you got a nicer pagerank than I feel your site has shown. This is, actually, quite a compliment for your ability to break past Google’s defenses!
The Results
It seems that in the 4th Quarter PageRank update, Google came out with a literal “gift” to many bloggers. I have found that the update was overall “soft” in that some less-than-stellar blogs were given extraordinarily high PRs to play with. Unfortunately, many of the solid blogs that I felt deserved higher marks were ripped off by the system this time around. This is confirmed in the numbers from this test sample:
Appropriately Valued: 48%- OVERvalued: 31%
- UNDERvalued: 21%
The Verdict
In all, we have much fewer blogs undervalued now in Q4 than in the Q2 update, when over 35% of blogs were undervalued. Accordingly, as essentially half of the blogs were again accuratly pageranked, we had a large amount of blogs that were overvalued (31%) compared to the measily 12.5% overvalued from the second quarter. Looking objectively at this, and assuming that I judged “fairness” in the same way, it looks like many bloggers got one heck of a gift this quarter!
Bottom Line: Google seemed to have once again done a fair job in pageranking the websites across the blogosphere. When you have around 50% of blogs appropriately valued, even subjectively speaking, twice in a row… you know that you have a pretty good system all things considered. There were many exceptions to the rule, but in general it seems like PageRank is actually a decent option to be objective.

robbed again, dunno why
it really blows that your site dropped from a 4 to a 3
Until Google takes away my search engine traffic and my money I make online, I could careless about their worthless PR…
Jay
Dang! I thought I could go to 4 this time… =(
yeah i would say so myself because your sites great
Hey Jim;
This is really cool (even though I am “overvalued”) — LOL.
You said “Again, if your site is listed here as “undervalued” it doesn’t mean that I don’t like you…” Did you mean overvalued? Am I confused (again)?
Thanks!
Mark
Right on Mark! I fixed that bit, very sorry… I got a massive headache running valuations on 100 blogs and slipped up on that one, haha
don’t worry jim his blog is no where near the top of blog’s yours is definitely better than his
oh your funny hes saying what he means
Thanks for the fair analysis of Top MMO…though, I would have preferred to be stamped ‘undervalued’
But this time around, I thought, there’re not too many complains about the PR update – perhaps the Google didn’t want to spoil bloggers’ New Year party. It’s been a softer update.
Wishing you & all readers here a Happy New Year!
and my blog is still pr0.. it kinda confuses me (even though pr is useless as many say) because some of the sites i have built just 2 months ago already have a pr of 2, some pr3, yet my melvin blog which is for 6 months now is still lurking at pr0! wtfass!
and to add the site has become pr2 2 months after it was created. then reduced to pr0 after 2 weeks and up to know
Did it not get penalized? I remember my site went from PR0 to PR2 earlier this year. But it went back to PR0 and after lodging a query with Google, I discovered that it had been penalized because of paid links. After making those links nofollow, it climbed back to PR2.
i would be really impatient to know that my pr 2 site one that i worked for to get to a 0 and than back upwould really kill me as far as that goes.
what a bummer i was very new to blogging myself and didn’t quite understand the whole pr thing but now i do that’s really a low blow to any blogger
Nice list.. a lot of work went into it.
I don’t agree with this one though. Jim has an amazing web site and provides TONS of information that helps people. He teaches more than say,
Again… this is all based of making money online, right?
Well sadly, I think John deserved a 6 too but I think Google is hitting on him for some linkbaiting issue in the past?
well thats good to know because it keeps them honest
I think the new PR for Jim Kukral is appropriate.I learn a lot from his articles. On the other hand, I think John Chow is really undervalued. But I do not think that he deserved PR6. PR5 would be fair in my view.
John chow is a good blogger but i really do think his pr suits him well and that’s not short handed either
I like Kukral and was on the fence about that one… I think he deserves a 4.5, I just feel like the blog isn’t marketed as much as it should be and a lot of the content isn’t well received by Google imo. I actually think it’s a fantastic website as well!
I must have been lucky or I’ve done good work (using all I learned from my own testing, heaps from Yours website and also from Garry Conn site, never ending) my 5 weeks old site, young domain received PR5. I worked on the site a lot basically. Is it overvalued or, undervalued??? Thank you.
I think ShoeMoney is over valued and John Chow is appropriate… Jim Kukral is definitely over valued considering his post frequency and poor content of late. Probably he was better earlier.
I guess next time, the top 100 itself should be split into two or three categories. We should clearly distinguish pro-bloggers from wannabes. Probably Top 20 (based on reader base, traffic) and the rest should be listed separately.
Another thing, can we say that the 45n5 Top 100 are really the top 100 MMO blogs?
great insight because i do agree to some extent but i prefer shoemoney over john chow anyday
Hey Jim,
Nice idea. PR isn’t necessarily a good indication about the quality of a blog so it’s nice that you injected your quality perception in there.
Btw, you listed Winning the Web with a fair value of “5″ but listed it as “overvalued”. I think you got it mixed up there.
Yup, I meant undervalued… good catch! I worked so hard to get them all correct, haha, I figured I would slip up somewhere along the way
great comparison and correctly said..
I think you made mistake for winning the web.. you mean “undervalued” ?
Yay! I have a pagerank of 1 now =D
Yippee! My blog, Online Bull, went from PR 0 to PR 4!
That’s probably the biggest leap of the day. What is your secret?
I think my PR would be higher if my blog was a little older. My blog just turned for month old. I look forward to the next page ranking update, by then my blog should be at least a pr 4
It doesn’t matter how long your site has been around, it’s not based on the age of your site. One of my sites is less than a few months old with VERY minimal backlinks, yet, it managed to get a PR3… simply worthless if you ask me!
Jay
its not useless its what makes you money online your lucky I got a 2 within 2 months
My blog got a PR 2, but on of it’s subpages got a PR 3!
I’m not going to lie, i’m really confused. My site started with a PR of 4 then dropped to two. Now I have hundreds more links then when I had a PR of 4 and it’ still a 2… I was really hoping to move up to at least a three this update.
Great update. Hmm I got only PR 1. That’s ok for me.And congratz Jim for your PR 4. And Happy New Year to all Net Fool Readers
My blog clocked one year two weeks ago. At the beginning of 2008, it had a PR of 0. In September 2008, it moved up to PR3. It has now risen to PR4.
Congratulations! The older your blog is, the more favorable your PageRanking will be in the long run
I will now work even much harder to see if I can increase my PR by 4 in 2009 just like I did in 2008. Lol!
Dude, I don’t know how you have the patience to come up with a list like that.
Anyway my pr went from 0 to 3 in 5 weeks, im sure it’s a little over valued but hey, im not gonna complain.
Lots of coffee and adderall
So its a caffeine induced list.
great for noticing and giving yourself and valuable evalution of your site many would not admit that
hum. my slap continued…. too bad…
My site was basically a wash. Need to be more active and write more posts. But thanks for the link!
at least you admitted it you need to try writing more blogs not many ould
Loving the new posts Jim
Keep it up!
Should I be upset that I’m not even on the freakin’ list??? lol
I guess this way I’m spared the embarrassment of being listed as “overvalued”. Or…is not even being on the radar worse?
Hope you had a spectacular holiday man, and best of luck in 2009!
Cheers!
Jay
A nice decent study of pagerank. I feel the same and I feel the PR system has improved over the years.
Thanks
PR 3! I’m lovin’ it!
haha… What a funny list. Half of these blogs haven’t even been around for a year…
….and what about Penn State taking it on the chin from USC – Go FSU !!!
It’s funny how the PR update screwed everyone over yet again. Who knows how they really rank all of us, but even a few of my sites that have not been updated or marketed EVER got a PR update, lol.
-Mike
Jim,
Great list! And a time consuming project, I’m sure
PR ranking really has not had any affect on our ability to generate solid revenue on the blog.
actually it does it can make you a range in income from a couple hundred to several thousand dollars
Is this pagerank system something that you have to sign up for or something that Google automatically does?
Another quick question,
How on earth do I get subscribers to my blog? I had 65 unique visitors two days ago and about 30 yesterday, but no subscribers. Do I need to do a contest of some sorts, I see alot of that.
Again, the help is always appreciated.
TAM
Your feed logo isn’t linked to your Feedburner url.
My blog is still stucked at PR3. Oh well, it’s better than going downhill. Good list.
Peter Lee
Wow! Where do you find the time to do all this? Any way, congratulations on hitting four again. You fully deserve it.
What i still cant figure out about PR is why does a blog go down in rank, if no loss of links has occurred. Since rank is all about links.
For example: If you’re blog has 30,000 backlinks and last update ranked at 5, why would it go down to a 4 or 3, if you still have the 30,000 backlinks (if not more).
In addition to links, PageRank is also much a function of quality content. I have had several blogs get PR 3 and PR 4 without much in the way of links. Having a lot of links is good for search engine placement, but having content that is updated frequently and is original & high quality will get you that upper-tier PageRank.
Hope that answers your question Missy, thanks!
crap… I’m undervalued again
I have read this post. This is very much true. I run a part time internet marketing business
I have been collecting many material on internet marketing and checking out Jeff Paul’s
internet marketing tactics. I hope that we can keep each other’s contacts so I can
discuss my problems Even I own a blog account. I will mention your post in my blog.
Nice list. Forget about undervalued or overvalued, its interesting to see which blogs lost all pagerank. Seems they were up to some not-so-good practices. lol.
Me? I wasn’t all too happy with the update. My site stayed the same at PR4, but we did get some nice ranking to interior pages… I guess my site was appropriately valued?… Somehow, I think it deserves a 5. lol.
Congrats for the better pr ranking for your blog.
Overvalued?? How about undervalued?? Hmmm… Anyway, congratulations on problogger.net for gaining a good PR.
Great job..Man its result your good blogging.
Interesting Guy’s Winning The Web is overvalued</i … as for my blog, I guess I’ll have to make sure I’m ready for the next quarter
My blog managed to get a PR of 3 this update. This is good news and I was very happy as it was 2 before. You should include me in your next issue. I liked this post, was a creative one.
Interesting. I think you should add one more category called “de-valued” or “punished”, because that’s what is happening with my blog at the moment.
Thanks for the list, I didn’t know most of those blogs
I could be nice to keep in the next update the previews pageranks and we can check the difference when time passes…
Great job and nice list.
I have added it to my favorites so in the next update I will check them…
I dont know If i am overvaluated or under but I do got my PR3 and happy about it.
I do not know if Google updates the pagerank, but I already has over 1 years with a PR4, every time Google does not put it more difficult to attract visitors to our site, Google wants all the web traffic for them, is not just be left to compete and I am trying to get by with Google Adsense.Pero really earn a pittance if you have it 5 to attract more visitors.
Greetings.
Great list… To this day I still can’t figure out how google manages to determine why one site is more relevant than another. Their whole page rank thing just seems a little biased in my opinion.
i think your blog’s PR drops to 3 again.
it has its no longer a pr of 4
I wish I could become a top blogger like them.
Oh, my dream 8-> I’m just a 17 year-old blogger
Wow that’s a long list, but I heard that pagerank is something that blogger and website owners should worry about. That it may increase or decrease, but it doesn’t really say much about your blog. When I reach a high enough pagerank I will display it on my blog, but I am not really worried about it that much.
Thanks
Nick (RefAccess)
I notice that problogger has dropped down to PR 6 now. But, respect! In my (limited) knowledge it fairly easy to get a PR4 site. But as the scale is logarithmic getting to PR5 is out of most peoples reach unless you have some serious promotion or organic links coming in. As for PR6 and 7, well, you are really doing well. 8 and 9 – forget it!
