Making Money Online by Flipping Websites for Profit - Using Arbitrage To Earn Online
Posted on August 13th, 2008 by Jim under Blogging 101, Make Money Online
One of the more popular methods of making money on the internet is the process of “flipping” websites for profit. It’s talked about far too often, so I’d like to let those of you who are still a bit fuzzy on the details into the big secret. Before we discuss the actual process, it’s important to understand the concept of arbitrage.
What is Arbitrage?
While arbitrage sometimes refers simply to the process of arbitration (think mediating in a court of law), financial arbitration refers to the process of concurrent buying and selling for profit. Confused? Well we all know the basic idea of buying low, selling high… right? Using arbitration would be buying something and then selling it for a higher profit. Essentially any trade where you make out ahead, is utilizing arbitration to your advantage. Now enough business talk, let’s discuss flipping!
What does Arbitrage have to do with Website Flipping?
A successful “flip” of a website is one that makes a profit. Therefore, website flipping is really all about an individuals ability to seek out a low purchase price on a website that allows for a higher selling price at some other time down the road. Now, I don’t like to mess too heavily in risk by putting down a few hundred dollars for someone else’s website. Luckily for us, flipping a website (arbitrage) can also mean starting up your own
low-cost blog on a new domain name and getting it to sell.
The Process
Many people preach making $1000s every day by starting up a slew of new blogs and selling them the same day. This is a lie that is being permeated by fools that like to believe in these get rich quick schemes. Nobody buys a website that is one day old for anywhere north of $20… so best of luck if you are going to go against my recommendation and try anyway.
It doesn’t take much to buy some cheap articles and build a website up over time, so let’s aim for a two week turn around time. Just remember that we really don’t need to pay any attention to the blogs we are going to flip, so it’s kind of just money building up in the background.

Here is the simplified process:
|
Registering Your Domain Name
Arguably the most difficult part of flipping a website is finding a brandable domain name that has a keyword in it and a .com extension. You are going to want to make sure that you register domain names with .com endings only, because this will add about $20 average onto your sale price… and that could make or break your profit margin. I would recommend buying with 1and1.com because they offer consistently low pricing and have free private domain name registration on all new names ($6.99/yr).
What makes a good domain name? Basically you want something that is easy to remember (brandable), has something obviously tied to your niche (one keyword minimum) and isn’t too long. You can have a hyphen,
but anything more than two words long isn’t what you are looking for (excluding word like “the” or “pro”). Check out my domain guide for more information about this process.
Setting Up Your WordPress and Web Hosting
Obviously, a blog needs to be hosted somewhere. Fortunately for you, if you don’t already have web hosting I wrote a guide as part of my “Creating a Blog” series that will get you the best deal of your life!
I recommend installing and using the WordPress blogging system if you are going to flip a blog for profit. Not only is it the most widely used system, which will give you the best profit margin on your buy-sell arbitrage, but it is one of the easier programs to install and set up on your blog. Again, if you need help installing WordPress I have a handy installation guide for you to use yourself.
Configure a Monetized WordPress Theme with a Brandable Logo
Making your blog look great is really a lot easier than it would seem at first glance. You don’t want to pay anyone to do this for you, because there are plenty of free themes from providers like WP Theme Designer or OSWD that you can use 100% free… further increasing your margins and decreasing risk.
If you have a copy of Adobe Photoshop, it’s pretty easy to whip up a free logo on your own. You can just grab a neat stock image from a free service like Stock.Xchng or a paid service like iStockPhoto, slap on the
name of your website and save it! Otherwise, why not try and hire a cheap designer off of a webmaster forum (I use Digital Point)? This will run you $5-$15 a piece, depending on quality of course.
Adding Articles and Content to Your Blog
If done effectively, the set-up will take about 30 minutes per blog. So by the time you have worked through your set-up, you should have a whole army of good looking blogs ready to go. All you need now is some unique content! You could, again, either write up articles yourself or pay someone to do it for you. I recommend paying someone, as writers will give you some good work that Google picks up well for a very affordable rate. You could end up paying as little as $1-2 for each article, a very affordable down payment!
I recommend adding anywhere from 5 to 15 articles total per website. Where can you find someone to write articles for you? Try the “content” sales section of Digital Point forums or have a look on Google. You really only need around 350 words on each article, so it shouldn’t be too costly.
List Your Blog for Sale, and Take Your Gains!
Now that we have an “established” blog… or at least one that appears to be… it’s time to talk things up a bit and pitch it for sale. If you have done this effectively, you can successfully flip a blog in less than a week. However, I still recommend building blogs for two weeks before considering selling. You want to talk your website up a bit, targeting things like niche market exposure, great domain, brandable content and design, awesome start up…. things like that.
It’s pretty easy to spin off a website on Digital Point to another member, but you will usually get a higher sale price if you are using a fee-based service like SitePoint. Depending on the job you have done making the website and pitching the sale, it shouldn’t be too hard to pull in $50 to $100 for each website that you made.
Where is the “Big Money” in Flipping Websites?
So you’ve seen how easy it is to make a quick $50-$100 turn around for a blog that you make, load with content, and sell. But where’s the profitability in this? Seeing that the only real set up is day one (the rest is just putting up some easy content), you can literally do five of these websites a day and have a whole recurring train of income coming your way once things mature a bit.
Of course, the bigger money is made by picking up a blog yourself and turning it around to make a bigger profit later down the road. However, there is a lot of risk involved in this… especially if you don’t know what you are doing.
Bottom Line: By starting up and subsequently selling a bunch of niche targeted blogs you can easily “flip” for profits of a few $1000 every month. It may not be too glamorous, but now that you have the tools necessary to start “flipping” on your own… there’s nothing stopping you from seeing the money roll in!

You have some great tips layed out for anyone that wants to get started, but you’re missing just one really important step - it’s building a website in a niche that has buyers to that the new owner (when they purchase your site) can build it up to make more money. If you’re trying to flip just any website on any topic you wont make a dime!
THe key is to do your research and be sure that it’s a profitable niche for future buyers.
Also, be sure to spend time writing a good listing - you may not realize it, but a website is still a product that you have to SELL to someone, be sure you’re writing a listing that includes your research into the niche and the benefits (and features) of the site.
Great post:)
Chaunna
I would have assumed that only a site with a decent PR and Alexa would sell. One thing about buying and flipping that can double your flip possibility - buy your domain name, then buy the same name with THE in front. If dogcatcher dot com is the first site, buy THEdogcatcher dot com.

@Chaunna - Great point. This is a nice post but it certainly makes it sound “easy” to sell a website. I haven’t tried this yet, but I imagine that there aren’t a ton of people lined up to buy 2 week old websites with little content and with no real traffic just because it is available… but I am probably wrong. I guess I will have to try this out.
Hope it works.

Don’t really know if you can successfully sell a young site that easy, and in a short term. I think site flipping requires some time to let things grow. IF you successfully build a decent site with good traffic and a good feed subscriber base then you are on target to sell it for a decent amount of bucks, but i wouldn’t sell anything that has less than 1-2 months.
I use dynadot to buy domains, although the 1and1 prices seem to be a bit lower

hi, i am the webmaster guy. I have experience in web design and development for almost 5 years. Frankly speaking, i have studied the current market in digitalpoint and i can say that everything is too underpriced.
My suggestion is that you can make more money, if you focus more by spenting more time and effort into establishing a really big website (let say marketing, seo, etc) instead of just creating new blogs and flipping it.

Sounds like too much work to manage all those blogs. I started to make multiple blogs and realized just how much work it is. It can get overwhelming fast. I am up to 3 blogs and that is far as I am going for now. All 3 need constant maintenance and take up lots of time.
Very thorough and informative post though Jim.

I’ve been flipping websites new and old for a long while now and have even started teaching others….
You can flip new sites just a few weeks old but it will take more effort, it has to be a valuable site in the content and design in order for a “marketer” to pick it up and build it to the high profits you guys want.
Yeha you may not make thousands each flip like someone that took time to make sales and drive traffic would, but if you flipped just one small site a day at $150 (which isnt hard to do) then you’re making a pretty nice income each week - (and this can easily be done part time if you still have one of those JOBS)
I agree that this topic has been talked about way too much as of late. That being said, you offer a fresh perspective with solid details and steps.

Just a clarification here.
A lot of you guys are freaking out at the idea of having to “manage multiple blogs,” but flipping websites doesn’t require this. All you have to do is make a quick design using some cheap logos that would take about 30 mins tops. Once you have it set up, you just load it with pre-paid or quick-written content that you really don’t need to pay much attention to.
We are just going for a look that says: “hey, you could start from the beginning… or you could by a blog that’s already off the ground from me!”
Well, Jim, I have to say that I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one recommends 1and1.com. You just can’t beat the price and include the privacy for free. They’re the only ones that do that from what I’ve seen.

Great one Jim…don’t know how I missed it this week…I’m a bum for that! Anyway, I use 1and1 for all my domains too…and love them.
I like how you busted the myth of quickly selling blogs, for more than $20 bucks the same day you set them up. The key here is to get creative, and I must say, I will have to try my hand at flipping some sites.
Normal Joes last blog post..Tired of this crap man Feedburner stats are wack
This is a great post. I have just started website flipping and am wondering why I am not having much luck (i tried to flip websites within a day). Now I am seeking to wait 2 weeks-1months before flipping (which means I have to be patient)…I am writing the articles myself also.
Would LOVE to see a post on completing bigger site flips
I found this post from IMwithJoe.com - good stuff for the most part. But, I disagree here.
“Many people preach making $1000s every day by starting up a slew of new blogs and selling them the same day. This is a lie that is being permeated by fools that like to believe in these get rich quick schemes. Nobody buys a website that is one day old for anywhere north of $20… so best of luck if you are going to go against my recommendation and try anyway.”
Care for a friendly blog challenge? I guarantee I can start 5 new sites, and list them for sale within 24 hours. When the auction closes, if I’m not over $1,000 - I’ll be pretty close. That’s with BRAND NEW domains and 1 day old sites. If you are up for the challenge, you can email me by using the contact section on my blog. I’d definitely be willing to be the guinea pig for your follow-up post.
Of course, this is a bit time consuming, starting and flipping 5 sites in 24 hours, so I don’t do it regularly. I also don’t preach that I make $1,000 a day though. But it definitely is possible.
I don’t see what there is to lose, take the challenge! The difference is, there are professionals at this, and then there is the weekend warrior that finds the 2AM infomercial and tries their luck. Just because you can’t do it, that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. I know first hand that it’s possible to sell a 1 Day domain for a few hundred bucks. It’s not hard to make a domain worth 200 bucks, you just gotta think about it.
Sweet idea!
I am going to give this a shot. If I could make a $1,000/mo, that would take care of my utilities for the month and I cannot explain to you what that would do for me. So once I get anywhere near this, it will be a total success.
Thank you for the insight NetFool. Like another commentor said, I had no idea that new websites could be sold, but I guess everything has a price.
Will be subscribing to your site. Be sure to thank ImWithJoe.com for his “What I see” segment that brought me to your site.
Rather, I should say that I will be thanking him because I am going to put this one in practice. I have an idea already.
Thanks for the interest Freddie! I’m glad you learned something new and that you found my blog. Let me know your status, and I’ll help you along the way!
i also read ebooks about flipping website. but the questions is
1. do you need to promote the website and earn $$ before you sell it???
2. how to setup the price of the website you flipped?

Thanks for this post. I agree - that it is an excellent way to make quick money. I did this when I first started working online. I actually use a custom script to do these repeat website installs (for wordpress-based sites that are already packed with features, themes and plugins that I want, and any text) and it only takes 5 minutes to install the whole thing. If i want to create a site to sell to a loan officer, I can use the script for the install related to that. If I create other templates to use, I can use the install script specifically related to that. It saves lots of time.
Your site is very interesting - thank you for the great post!
