Making Money Online… by Being Sneaky? – Learn How to Profit On Ordinary Posts
Posted on August 15th, 2008 by Jim under Blogging Tricks, Make Money Online, Observations
With all of the talk about making money online doing things like flipping blogs, affiliate marketing or building web traffic, we often forget of one of the more fundamental methods of earning some extra cash… being sneaky! A lot of bloggers will constantly push and promote different products for visitors to try and make sales. Is this really the most effective way to turn an ordinary post into a full-fledged money maker? Not Necessarily!
What is perhaps more effective is the casual approach. Say I am talking about making an eBook for cash… why not mention off hand that I have a cheap eBook that will go further in depth into the topic at eBook-Rich.com? Or what if I’m talking about setting up your blog to run WordPress? It’s pretty easy to say hey, I’m hosted on HostGator servers and love my service. Slip in a link, and you have yourself a few sales that could make you a few $100 in week!
Let’s talk about the advantages of making commission off of sales in an indirect way. Call it being sneaky, but avoiding the constant bombardment of “buy this” and “order that” could be your golden ticket to profit.
Profit-Seeking Bloggers Are Divided Into Two Schools of Thought
I feel that in the “make money online” niche (or entrepreneur, what have you), bloggers that write content with a profit-seeking mindset can be made into two distinct groups. In the old mantra, people would pick up extra referred income by making posts directed at selling a product to people. The new class would be made up of blog owners that openly offer advice on more broad-based topics, slipping in the occasional promotion (at an appropriate time) to make that killer sale.
Old School Technique: Market for the Sake of Marketing
Since the first few blogs have appeared on the subject of making money online, there have been a whole bunch of writers that make articles with the intention of selling you something. Many times, this comes in the form of opt-in newsletters that send occasional email advertisements intent on getting you to purchase a product. In a few other cases, bloggers will make individual posts to advertise a product that they came out with… or perhaps even try to sell you on someone else’s promotion with a referral link in place.
This “old school” mantra would suggest that you get the most bang for your advertisement by simply smacking people over the head with information. There’s nothing wrong with this method, as it does bring in fantastic sales and is probably the best way to let people know of a product without having to flat-out teach a new lesson. One example of this school of thought is when I wrote about my new eBook. A more recent example is when John Cow pitched his Traffic Kahuna service.
New School Technique- Marketing to Enhance and Enrich
As nobody is going to read a blog that contains post after post of “in-your-face” advertising, the “new school” technique of writing involves cleverly slipping in a product pitch into an otherwise ordinary article. This can be even more effective than devoting an
entire post to a new product. Why? People are often turned off from the start when the title of a post reveals itself to be a simply marketing ploy. By being a little sneaky and writing about a related topic, slipping in a commission-paying link as a point of reference along the way, a lot of readers will be much more inclined to hear you out and buy your stuff.
How about a little example? Garry Conn does this in marketing the popular HostGator web hosting referral program. This program pays him commission on everyone that buys hosting through his link. So when he wrote about migrating a blog installation, he slipped in his HostGator link as his “preferred” hosting solution and got sales from people that were interested. It’s descreet, albeit a bit sneaky, but it’s a really helpful way to maintain your excellent content and make profits from marketing at the same time.
How Can Being Sneaky Make Money?
It’s a pretty simple concept. Rather than coming over the top to get people to send you some affiliate cash, it can be much more effective and rewarding to simply try and write as normal. You can turn almost any “ordinary” post into a full-fledged profit machine simply by being creative. If I’m writing about “bum marketing,” I could put in a link to a product that help users submit articles to
directories. If I’m writing about how to tie your shoe, I could put in a spot advertisement for Nike shoes assuming they are my “favorite brand.”
I’m amazed that some of my older posts on WordPress plugins still generate 1-2 sales every month of the OIO Publisher plugin… getting me a quick $15 a pop. Hey, maybe I’ll get some sales from this post now that I just slid a reference in!
Bottom Line: A lot of bloggers don’t grasp how easy it can be to start making money online from your everyday writing material. The best of the best will make a great deal of money simply by being creative. Referrals to products that will help readers out can even be helpful if the service is truly worthwhile… so there’s no need anymore to actually degrade your blog into worthless marketing. Use the old school and new school techniques more effectively, and watch your income soar!

First of all, I’m an ass for not coming here before. You have extremely solid content!

I’m more likely to come back to a blog if the author is “sneaky” about the promos, as I’m sure a lot of readers are, especially if the link is slipped into ‘valuable’ content. So, even if I don’t buy from that particular post, you have more chances of me buying from you again when I return.
…and I will return.
Great stuff!
Cheers!

hey well i think the referral thing comes easy when you have provided you readers with good credibility… just look at shoemoney, he doesnt even use a php redirect for affiliate links but he’s making a lot of refs because he’s that reliable…
Melvins last blog post..Ad Spots/Types I Don’t Think Look Good For Readers
Hi Jim,
Great article… I wouldn’t call my post sneaky. It’s actually “Bold Face” clear… I will NOT provide my service unless you sign up for HostGator.com. I am pretty blunt and very forward about this. Sorry that my post doesn’t fit as an example to your point, but I understand what you are talking about.
Garry Conns last blog post..Free Wordpress Installation Service
This is a really great post Jim. I’ve definitely been falling into the old school camp on a number of my sites which I now think are suffering from it.
I am now planning to create some most stronger content and put any affiliate links in more “sneakily” as opposed to straight in readers faces
“Being sneaky” doesn’t have to mean hiding things from readers. I’m really just talking about the whole mindset that’s different from focusing on a product versus focusing on a lesson. You can have your referral links, in fact, you can even tell people what you are doing!
If the content is good, readers are much more inclined to make a purchase in my experience.
Good stuff big Jim! I like both methods and also what Melvin said. I’m moving more towards creating an environment where the readers trust me enough to know when I’m promoting something, and buy if they want.
I also put aff links into articles at times, and most of the time I will let you know what it is. Though, it’s not really sneaky because most know if you post a link to a service or product you will be getting some loot to boot!
Like you say, both ways work and it just depends on the situation. If you are talking about something and have an aff link that relates put that muggy in there! And, if you found a product or service that you just want to be a pomo slut about…do it! If you have a good rep with your readers they won’t mind either way
As always, you provide us with a great read…and that’s all that matters! Jay is a bum, he should have been over here by now…
@Jay go through my links of bloggers man, you’ll love em and they’ll change your life
ahahahha
see ya
Good points here… I wouldn’t consider this sneaky… I mean… are commercials on TV sneaky? They are what keeps TV in business. Without them there is no TV, so it is a necessary evil.

Even though I don’t have a MMO-niche blog, I usually use this technique, and it’s just like you say. it’s effective and sneaky
. I make about 1 OIO sale every month from the two posts I mentioned it in
.
I utilize the sneak method on my blog and find it to the be the best for conversions, I hate pushy sales.
Thanks Jim,

What a great post! As a new blogger, I am constantly looking for new strategies on how to monetize my blog. I am still trying to build an audience so I definitely don’t want to bombard my readers with ads but this “sneaky” approach may just be something.
I’ll give it a shot

It is true. Sometimes my older posts show up in the searches or image searches and I get quite a few leads that way. Being sneaky can be useful as long as you don’t do it to rip someone off but affiliate links are nothing but gold.
Enkay Blogs last blog post..Why You Need A Contact Form
Yes. Instead of writing a post for the sake of marketing a product, why not just recommend it in a few words. Especially if the content of the post is useful, then surely you will get sales.

Love this post. It actually gives me an idea for my next post. Thanks for the inspiration. The sneaky technique will definitely work. I notice that if I see a post that is just dedicated to some new found money making technique, that I will not read that post because the same technique has been plastered on thousands of other blogs. Adding the link within a post about some other unique interesting topic is the way to go.

I think most have elaborated on this already, but the sneaky method is going to win, I do not cloak affiliate links on my blog, and generally I do not push products. If you like my review or want to check it out ok, if you want to hit the site without my affiliate link thats great too. While making loot to boot is great I’m out to help my readers foremost.

I would have to agree with others. It’s not really being “sneaky”, but it’s more about optimizing your posts. There really isn’t anything sneaky about it since most of your readers are bloggers too and they know all about optimization. But I guess you can call it sneaky if there are a few people who don’t know about this trick.
I think it’s pretty unfair to assume that your readers know you are going to be profiting from their purchase. Not everyone is as smart as you Sly
