Google Pagerank Update - Does Pagerank Accurately Judge Website Popularity?
Posted on July 26th, 2008 by Jim under Announcements, Blog Services, Observations
As many of you have probably heard by this point in time, the Q2 2008 Google Pagerank update has just concluded. Every few months, Google re-evaluates every website on the internet and places rankings on some of the best sites available. This ranking metric is very important for blogs for many reasons, including reader participation, advertising rates and industry reputation.
Don’t believe what you hear, Google Pagerank isn’t as worthless as people (with bad rankings) try to point out. The bottom line is that sometimes, the rankings are unjustifiably high or low. However, for the most part Google does a fantastic job presenting accurate representations of website popularity. TheNetFool.com held it’s PageRank 4 designation, which I believe is a 100% accurate rating for the time being based on statistics, quality and traffic. Despite the fact that I would prefer a PR 5 (wouldn’t we all), it’s important to look objectively at things to see what you are really worth in the eyes of a third party.
The Net Fool’s Pagerank “Fair Value” Rankings
Because of the constant ranting on how “unfair” Google’s Pagerank service is, I decided to pull generously from my RSS reader to see how other blogs in the “make money online” niche fared on the updating process. Below, you will find a list of 55 blogs, their new Pagerank as of July 26th 2008, and their The Net Fool “Fair Value” ranking.

The Results
Google often gets bad press on the Pagerank process, but I believe that a lot of this criticism is undeserved. As the results show, a lot of the blogs that represent the “make money online” niche are either appropriately valued or downright overvalued… getting more than they statistically deserve in my opinion.
- Appropriately Valued: 51% of blogs
- Overvalued: 12.7% of blogs
- Undervalued: 36.3% of blogs
I was overly critical of Pageranks in my own analysis, so most will actually find more than 51% of blogs to be accurately represented by the recent Pagerank update. At any rate, a clear majority (63.7%) should have no cause for concern, but it is the rough
one-third of blogs that is publishing the negative press that we have all come to know and love.
The Verdict
Google does in fact to an impressive job in accurately portraying a website’s overall popularity and traffic strength. Many webmasters feel that they deserve better rankings, but lack the link juice from upper-tier blogs to get them the reputation that they need to obtain higher rankings. Furthermore, many “undervalued” blogs simply haven’t been around enough for Google to honestly justify a high PR for the website.
Bottom Line: Hopefully, this sample pool of websites is large enough to get an accurate representation of the Google Pagerank process… as I feel it does. All this weekend, be prepared to hear all of the Pagerank “horror stories” that are out there. Just don’t forget that many bloggers post on impulse rather than rationality, and this case study clearly favors Google as the results lean toward appropriate or generous valuations. Sure, there are a few websites that Google has totally botched… but you need to expect that to happen if they are analyzing so many pages!

Great post Jim, nice chart too. I have no idea how my blog is PR4, lol, really…
Ralphs last blog post..Flash Effects
I could see that blog being PR4, definitely high quality design and your content seems pretty decent. There are a lot of factors, and quality is a big one… so you would have been at LEAST a PR3
Ah.. my http://video.persusi.org drop from 4 to 0 wahahah
the others still stuck at their position T___T so sad…
Shireishous last blog post..Anime Hair Coloring Tutorial With Mouse
Mine too is still stuck at PR3… but i don’t care about that until my SERP rankings are good for some nice keywords.
I agree with Jim, your blog is really nice and very original. I’m sure if you keep adding content as much as you already do you’ll be a PR5 in no time.
Also nice chart Jim how long did that take to make?
Germzs last blog post..Must Have Firefox Plugins for every webmaster.
I appreciate the sentiment. My blog used to be PR2, but for reasons unknown to me, I’ve been PR0 for months. I even went back through my site a month ago and redid everything to be google-compliant (even sent them a letter), but still no PR. Oh well.
Geoffs last blog post..eBay Autoblogs - A Learning Experience
I just checked my PR today and saw that I had a PR 3. My PR is much better than the others, isn’t it?
Ganeshs last blog post..Why a Paid Hosted blog is better than a free hosted blog
I am quite happy with the PR3 ranking I was given, although the goal was pr4 I had laid off the blog commenting and back link creation. Due to the amount of guest posts and linkbacks due to quality content I believe my blog’s PR rank to be quite fair. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion though. Many people do not take the time to consider all the factors which can make up your PR. Back links are important, but not more than 50% of the whole sum when making a PR.
Sunday’s post @ http://www.benjaminpatton.com will outline other factors many have abused or misued or not even considered when considering the fairness of the given page rank. So far I am pleased with the updates in my niche. With exception to a couple that did not break the rules and did optimize correctly and still managed to just squeek it out with a 1 or 2.
Keep in mind that what one person thinks fair means almost nothing to a crawler which is what PR is about, unless you manage to get a person to review your PR. That in itself is a topic of debate.
No sympathy from me for TLA’ sellers getting smacked. The whole point of PR originaly was to sort the engines by relevance and keep it honest. If you can buy (technically speaking) pr 10 back links it totaly negates this. My .02
Grats on keeping PR4 btw. Not entirely sure why you would think I am over ranked though :/
Big Ben Pattons last blog post..Google Page Rank Update In Progress!
Jim, what about my blog, do you think it deserves a PageRank 3?
Rajaie AlKoranis last blog post..Google PageRank Updated
Thanks for blogging about this Jim. This has been a sensitive subject with me and Google certainly knows it. I have constantly been hammered by them and finally I was enjoying have a PR of 3 and they have decided to take it down a notch. I was previously awarded a PR 4 for one of my other sites then soon after given a -4 and there I was back at PR 0. I just don’t get it!
I’m still at 0, but thats expected as my blog is not even one month old yet.
Maybe next month I can get em .
IronBloggers last blog post..Why Do We Bloggers Blog?
I think the results you have shown is a proof that google pr isn’t as bad as what most people (who dont have pr) think… Great read
I honestly don’t know what builds great PR. I believe my blog is still new, and like you say, google is still getting to know it. I was surprised by John Cow’s rank, and moneybites.com!!
You and Tuk I wasn’t too surprised about, John Chow I don’t read so I don’t know….from what I have read, I’m not sure he has the content of you, tuk, cow…or BigBen…
But, Chow doesn’t need PR, he has the hype and traffic to make it even if he had a PR -7 lol
I thought Ben’s rank was cool, his content is up there in my opinion an his traffic is growin. Surprised at Johny Volk’s rating too…. I don’t read many of the other blogs enough to form an opinon. Again, I don’t know how they decide it…so…it’s still hard for me to form an opinion.
I guess we can all continue to guess how the PR is given and try to operate accordingly.
@ Ben: Again, nothing personal. I just believe that your blog at this point in time should have merited a PR 2 based on your relative linking power and the short time span that you have actually been actively blogging. Typically older blogs get better PR, I love your site personally though!
@ JK Swopes: John Chow actually had a skirmish of his own with Google, so they are hurting his rankings intentionally. You’ll see that he doesn’t even rank for the term “John Chow” if you search through Google. Shady business there
@Jim Ill take it as a compliment at this point. I feel that next PR I will have a harder time though. As far as JohnChow… He is being hosed by google, the best part is it only add’s to his publicity. While this approach doesnt often work for the rest of us, he has it down to a science.
@JK I was almost sure you would net a pr2-3 and I figured if I made the pr3 cut that moneybites would as well. His blog and mine are very similar in analytics, but for some reason… Who knows…
I’m not happy with the update since my blog is still penalized with PR zero.
Husseins last blog post..PR Update, Prediction is True
@Hussein, how can you be sure that it is penalized?
You are still good in SERPs and not de-indexed right? It might be just that you did not get that quality backlinks or something?
@Chetan - It’s a long time ago. I think somewhere in March. I’ve been doing text-link-ads and payperpost at that time from PR3 it is down into pr1 and then 0. I think I have enough backlink
Husseins last blog post..Sunday Link Love #1
Pagerank doesn’t mean a thing if you aren’t getting quality google traffic.
My blog went from 5 to 4, yet my monthly search traffic went from 8.66% to 24.99%… If I can see an improvement like that again next update, I will gladly take a large pagerank deduction.

Hey Jim,
Nice post.. I just got a PR 4 at Balkhis. Wondering what are your thoughts on that. Whether it is overvalued, undervalued, appropriate or what not.
Syed Balkhis last blog post..Scour - New Generation of Search Engines that pays you to Search
I am kind of curious here. You say you “decided to pull generously from my RSS reader to see how other blogs in the “make money online” niche fared on the updating process”. What criteria did you use?The number of RSS subscribers to each one of these blogs?Or just your own valuation based on what you see on these blogs? Your evaluation might also be unfair.
On the other hand, congratulations on your gain in PR. I moved up to PR3 from PR2 as well.My site is seven months old.

I think TUK’s PR is undervalued. It should actually be at PR10, heck, make that PR11.
Jasons last blog post..Google Pagerank Update
6 months in service and no PR yet. Well, I guess it might have something to do with the lack of updates lately. Well, thanks for having “faith” in my site and putting it on the last spot!
Hehe.

VikingBloggers last blog post..Google Page Rank Update
My site went from a PR 1 to PR 0
I’d say it’s totally fair that it’s only a 0 now as my blog is still very new, but i’m a bit baffled as to why I had the PR 1 in the first place since my domain had not really been used for anything for quite a while before I started my blog on there. Now that the site is up and running and has (fairly) regular content and some visitors, they take it away. Weird.

Hi Jim and all other guys here.
This is first post i read here so i am not sure what TNF “Fair Value” is, but i believe it is let’s say … not so wise, to compere it to PageRank. In my opinion Google PagerRank will be far more objective and accurate then any other list, simply because they have more experience and more data to calculate this type of thing.
Not to mention that, despite PR export happened few days ago, what we see is actually data from may or june … well actually i am not sure of that, but maybe someone with more experience will comment on my comment
Gregs last blog post..Semantic Search Engines
I was hoping to get up the ladder, but could not. But I don’t mind about it - as I think PR3 is fine for my blog.
Wow… You got PR-4. It’s very nice to hear. I think this time Google is somewhat liberal in offering PR to certain niches other than make money online. Anyhow congrats Jim!!!
Sadly my new site (1 month old) only acheieved a white bar…. I was hoping for a 1 at least as it has been having some great traffic and has 1000 backlinks at least…. oh well!
Strangely two dormant blogs jumped up to PR2 but still my home blog (11000 backlinks) stayed on big fat 0!!! It was a PR4 once for 2 weeks.

This is interesting. My pagerank dropped sadly, I think I was undervalued (who knows. Maybe I have a crappy site) Now I am PR2 when I used to be PR3. I will work on linkbuilding a bit and hope the next update comes soon.
I don’t want anyone to get too upset. Those of you that are wondering what the heck “TNF Fair Value” is, it is just me judging objectively where a website should have been ranked in the PR update. Basically whether the PR is accurate or unjustified. I don’t want anyone getting mad at me for giving a poor ranking when you think your blog deserved better.
Chances are, I love you blog, but just feel like you don’t post enough, don’t post enough quality or don’t have enough exposure quite yet.
Yup. You are so right. PR hardly makes any difference. I’m stuck at PR3 for a while now but I guess I deserve it

Nice post - interesting reading the feedback. I know there are historic reasons why Internet Babel has been PR punished. I’m just working gradually on bringing it back up, and consoling myself that PR isn’t everything.
Maybe you’ll have to get some ‘TNF Fair Value’ badges made so the people who did well can put them on their sites

@ Jim - I didn’t know about the Chow/Google battle lol, either way, he’s doing fine so it doesn’t matter. I like lists like this, it’s good to see what others opinions are about the sites we all dwell among.
I hope no one got offended, by now we should all be able to take peoples opinions, and listen to them. That’s how we learn the most…..

hum. well i lost a point on PR. i was used t osee a 3 on my page rank, now it looks like a bit empty lol. anyway. i guess it could be worse. what makes me wonder is that sites i have, that i haven’t done anything to develop or to build links to them are ranked with 1-2. And comparing to my blog something is fishy..

All in all Page Rank cannot completely accurately gage popularity on all websites, because backlinks are not always natural, often the reciprocal links and other link building methods that boost page rank have nothing to do with popularity.

Hi - a very good post, OIBO has been at PR4 for a few months now, glad that we did not go down during this update. A few of my other sites were hit and went from 4/5 down to 3/4 and in one case down to 2 - but most of those sites have been neglected for months so I expected as much.
Mos last blog post..Presenting Yourself
One thing that comes into play is that it is “page” rank, not site rank. A site with a lower ranked homepage can hide a lot of rank inside. The chances that my latest ten posts are the ones I want to emphasize are slim.
Stephan Millers last blog post..The Ultimate DoFollow Blog List
Page rank is like wearing a Rolex. It has to be seen by someone who knows what a Rolex is and actually cares that it’s a Rolex, or you have to verbally tell them “Hey, I’m wearing a Rolex in case you didn’t notice.” lol
99% of the population won’t notice and won’t care.
Both go virtually unnoticed unless the situation is perfect or you broadcast it to everyone. Consider some of the free wordpress.com blogs that consistently rank 4 and 5 and it’s just Jimbo talking about himself. They have no domain name and often no real purpose. So, what does page rank truly mean outside of google flexing its internet muscle.
Signed,
Zero Page Rank (lol)
Higher PR = More money in your pocket
… it’s really as simple as that!
Nodoubt! Google page rank enhances your site’s popularity. Usually people search for particular keywords. The selection of keywords should be according to algorithm of the google search engine. There is no doubt that a site with high page rank is mostly displayed in the first page and its popularity also enhances.
Page rank definitely affects where you place in Google for various keywords you are targeting with your articles or blog updates. A nice, juicy page rank of four or five makes it a cinch to get on the first page of Google when you update your site with new content. But when your site is stuck at page rank of three or below it’s a lot harder to achieve those first page showings in Google. At that point you have to start building many more backlinks to your internal pages to “vote” for those pages’ relevance. And that can be a pain in the butt and a time stealer.
I had some nice pr 4 sites deranked to pr 3 and already I notice that when I post new content my material is stranded further back in Google’s index - pages two or three or even six, when formerly I could get on the first two pages. So this will definitely affect organic traffic for me. Meanwhile a new blog with quality content and a nice, gradual backlinking process - six months old - went from pr3 to pr2. Older content on the site has held its ground in Google, but I’m concerned about new content I post - it is likely to still get stranded further back in the index.
Unfortunately, getting on the first page of Google is still so important for traffic, and for those of us who like to build sites organically instead of shelling out money for Adwords, we live and die by Google’s hand.
