Day 24: Submitting Your Website to the Best Web Directories on the Net
Posted on July 3rd, 2009 by Jim under 30-Day Blogging, Web Development
When you are first building your blog, there is no doubt in my mind that you will stumble across what are known as “blog directories.” Personally, I’ve seen recommendations to submit my site to X directory literally hundreds of times… and it used to be one of the easiest and fastest way to boost your traffic and search engine ranking positions (SERPs). The question now is: are web directories still useful?
While I hate to give this kind of ambiguous answer, the truth is that people aren’t really sure. Google is constantly revamping the way that it looks at websites, how they appear in search results, etc. However, if I had to bet money I would say that web directories are still a viable way to artificially boost the number of high quality incoming links to your blog. Sites with more links, and links of higher authority (AKA Google Pagerank), are better placed in Google results. Sounds like something we want, eh?
Let’s get to submitting!
The (“Self-Proclaimed”) KING of Web Directories
One of the most frustratingly powerful directories out there on the internet is a place called DMOZ.org, the Open Directory Project. These guys are Google’s favorite directory, and will give your website a huge Pagerank 8 link back if you can get yourself listed. They don’t take cash for positions, and professional bloggers try everything from bargaining with the site’s official editors to paying $100s to people who claim to offer successful listings in order to get into this self-proclaimed dominant directory. You don’t need to bother with that… you just need to cross your fingers and submit your blog yourself for free!
How to Submit Your Website to a Directory
There are two methods to submitting your website: do it yourself, or hire a freelance worker to do it for you. I recommend the latter, as people will typically submit your website themselves dozens of times over for just a few dollars. However, many people like to save on costs (I know I sure did when I first started out) and do this themselves.
To hire a freelancer: Check out the webmaster forums at DigitalPoint or Warrior Forums. You’ll find loads of professionals ready and willing to do this.
To do it yourself: Since we are going to be filling out a lot of forms, it might be smart to automate the process with a form filler such as Roboform. You will then want to fill in on each site you enlist to things such as: Site Name, Keywords, Description, Link.
Always remember that the higher Pagerank you see on the web directory, the more powerful it is. I really wouldn’t bother submitting to anything less than Pagerank 3, as these directories won’t add much of anything to your search engine positions. I won’t be providing a list of “suggested directories” for you to apply to, as it would be more useful for you to search through Google for a few lists on your own. If you have a few bucks, the second best directory is the Yahoo! Directory… but I would argue it is overpriced.
Try your hand at getting listed in high-PR web directories, because it will potentially give life to your Google-based traffic from the start!

I’ll confirm, DMOZ is a hard directory to get in if your site is just another of thousands others. Bring some unique spin and polish to the table and their editors might just add your site.
Dmoz kinda sucks, you just can’t get in there normally.
I agree and am not a big fan of Dmoz, but you have to admit that a backlink from them would be very strong for you blog, so for that point, I will continue to try and get my niche sites listed in their directory.
I think it is worth the hassle.

DMOZ is free, but the difficulty to be listed is such a great price to bet. You really need to make your blog stand above of millions of blogs to be listed there.

Hello! First-time commenter, long time fan
What I don’t get about DMOZ is if they’re looking for quality sites, then why are there so many awful sites listed? I mean, the few times I’ve actually used it to research things most of the sites I found were terribly designed and filled with spam.
It kind of makes me think that their selection is kind of random… or at least on how swamped with submissions they are at the time.

Ive found that its becoming more difficult to find quality directories, it seems most directories with pagerank are from older domains that expired and people are grabbing them up and putting directories on them trying to earn money.
On another note I have a new affiliate program that maybe your blog could benefit from by making some extra money, we sell link building services that sell quite well because we sell them at affordable rates. If your interested in the details check http://www.nationsubmit.com/affiliate.php. Just thought that I would let you know about this opportunity to make some extra money.
Great article Jim! As a beginner in SEO, i have wondering what these directories are all about. Thank you so much for the useful information.
DMOZ is a gr8 thing but sucks. you should be quite able to bid such that u get top rankings.
Don’t forget to take full advantage of the title tag. Include our most important keywords or keyword phrases if possible.

Thanks for the very timely post. I recently found conflicting data on directory submissions. Some are saying that Google doesn’t recognize directory listings and others say the opposite – who to trust? From my perspective, generating one way links from any site with PR value is key. Personally, I look at the page within the directory where my site will be listed. If it has PR value of any kind then I submit my site.
Yes!!! I love your idea of submitting to different directories regularly. do you think directory submission is necessary for a blog with descent traffic (e.g. thenetfool.com)
I have submitted my site to DMOZ one year back and still waiting to get approval from them. DMOZ really sucks…

i like to submit my sites manually to quality directories available as to keep our site away from getting included into spammy directories with hundreds of outgoing links of all other niche sites at single page.

yes i too have few of my sites submitted to Yahoo directory (by paying for inclusion) but i would say its worth submitting sites which are of good potential and get the best from Yahoo dir listing.
Submitting to Dmoz and waiting for approval is really worthless now as it doesnt gets approved soon.

DMOZ doesn’t suck, the site that is rejected sucks. Now if the site that you have is not a quality site and fails to meet the listing guidelines of DMOZ, then surely it’ll be dumped. Just that your site doesn’t get listed need not mean that the directory is bad. I remember that story in which the fox says, “the grapes are sour”!!!
Do follow Forum directories are best for submit site. It is more beneficial then nofollow.
Why does everyone want to get into DMOZ?

I always outsource directory submission. It is to time consuming to do it by myself.
Another nice post Jim. I agree submitting your website to directories can help you out, but at the same time, be careful not to submit your website to too many that aren’t of value, because in turn, this will actually hurt your page rankings.
Just out of curiosity though Jim, are you planning on releasing a section of your site to view all visible 30 posts for the build-a-blog effort once it’s finished? I think it would be a great addition to place.

Dmoz is not a hard directory to get into, they are just careful who they include.
Bottom line if your site adds no value to your niche or the web in general then you wont get in. But if that is the case then not getting into Dmoz will be the least of your worries.

It can take quite a while to get listed in DMoz but like this post says it is totally worth it and never pay anyone who says they can get you listed just submit it yourself. I had never considered outsourcing getting listings in other directories though, I will definitely have to give that a try.

Everybody wants to be in DMOz because it has a massive effect on your SERPS in google
Hi Jim,
It’s definitely significant to submit websites to directories to gain traffic. It is an individual choice to choose freelancer or doing it yourself depending on following criteria:
1. Budget – Most important aspect
2. Time available
I think it comes down to whether your time is more valuable or your money. For me, it’s my time because I could be using my time to make more money… So I’d rather pay someone to do the dirty work for me to get in the directory. On the other hand, it is cheaper to do the legwork yourself if you aren’t in the position to pay someone. Either way, the directories are definitely worth it and a must have!
Submitting in Dmoz really worth. But now a days submitting in directories do not show effect as it was 3 years ago. Submission has to be done in “Good” directories. Now a days Google had penalized many top directories.
Do you recommend using directory submission software
I’m not a fan of submitting to directory sites so i only submit to one directory which is DMOZ. It’s been almost 2months and hope it’ll be approved soon.
I totally agree with you that DMOZ is tough to get in and you will definitely be forced to spend additional effort on you website to make it appear worthwhile for the editors, but believe me, a backlink from this catalogue is well worth the effort, you get a huge boost to your position.
yes, i agree, submitting your website into dmoz is great. but you need to be wait. in submission into directories, yes, you can hire cheap but quality link builder at digitalpoint forums
Great article! I’ll tell you one thing… the best way is to do everything yourself. If you do not know how to sumbit your website to a directory, then learn it! Good luck!
It’s almost impossible to get listed in dmoz
Be sure that your website fill the requirements if you don’t wanna wait another year .. lol
