A Fool’s Marketing Experiment

Posted by Jim in Blogging Tricks

There are internet marketers out there that claim to be making 5-digit, and sometimes even 6-digit, profits every month. How are they doing this? There are really a number of ways, and I have decided that I’d like to give things a whirl, starting with the Net Fool dot com, to see how its being done by other entrepreneurs. ;)

As such, I have started up a MySpace page and a Squidoo page registered as the net fool, in the hopes of getting some traffic, making some sales, whatever. I think this might work, but the only way to know for sure is to try it out… so I’m entering in on this craze. I’m going to be keeping all of you updated on what I am doing, how I am doing it, and the progress/success of this venture.

There are apparently ways to exploit these social bookmarking websites in order to create a fan base and basically people to market products toward. I have already started doing this in Twitter, as I outlined in a recent post, but I’d like to see what I can do with Myspace. I know that Facebook might seem like the easiest alternative, but I’d rather not go that route since I actually use that personally. :D

So the MySpace page has been set up at http://www.myspace.com/thenetfool and I’m hoping to try different things like adding a massive following of friends, getting some “top friends” placements across popular profiles (apparently this is a good thing to do), and spam around some personal messages to lure people in. Basically, people that are using MySpace to take advantage of internet marketing are evil… but I am interested to see how it all plays out.

Another networking website that i have been interested is this “Squidoo” and it is really considered to be “bum marketing.” Basically, it’s like a newer sleeker Wikipedia and functions much in the same way… except of course that people cannot edit your page (what they call a “lens”). Mine is registered at http://www.squidoo.com/thenetfool and I think it is a cool way to reach out and spark some traffic. Additionally, they give you a cut of their revenues made from your page… so maybe I can see some gains there right off the bat!

I’m thinking right now that the Squidoo ordeal might be a bit more intriguing (and successful) than my attempts at MySpacing my way to success. Why? Well apparently MySpace isn’t very SEO friendly, and I get the opportunity on Squidoo to actually flat out promote my blog with a live RSS feed and some other great marketing tools. But the network isn’t as big as MySpace so my opportunity seems somewhat limited. Both have their advantages, so I’m interested to see where the growth is. ;)

This is an experimental phase, and I probably am going to try and put as little money as possible into the project, as always. I’m a cheap, cheap man… so lets see what I can do in the way of internet marketing just by using some networking and traffic building tools available to the public!

How to Use and Exploit Twitter for Targeted Traffic & Increased Subscribers

Posted by Jim in Blogging Tricks

I recently came across a brilliant technique that can increase your traffic and returning readers by a considerable amount, using Twitter! Yes, the same service that thousands have marked off as “worthless” and “a waste of time” can be exploited to really pump traffic toward your blog. What am I talking about? Twitter Hopping! :D

I’m taking this article from here on out assuming that you already have a Twitter account or understand the basic idea behind the service. If you don’t know, why not read up on it in my Twitter review post? Let’s continue.

Okay, so here is the basic idea. Twitter.com allows you to track both your “followers” and those that you are “following.” Here’s where the trick comes in, you can view & easily follow anyone listed under any other members. This is a networking frenzy!

As bad as it sounds, you can leech off of other member’s friends that are in your niche. People that are following, for example, ShoeMoney are very likely to be interested in affiliate marketing and making money online. By looking at all of ShoeMoney’s friends and opting to “follow” all of them… I’m going to pick up hundreds of interested readers for my blog! Thanks for doing the work for us, eh? :)

Use the video guide provided as an example of how to work this trick. It’s very simple:

  1. Find a popular blogger in your niche on Twitter
  2. Navigate to their Twitter page
  3. Go over to the “following” link off of the website
  4. Click the “follow” tab next to all of their interested readers!

This is not to say that I do not care what the people I am following have to say. I have pulled hundreds of interested viewers using this method, and have returned the favor by visiting their websites. It’s an awesome way to network in the blink of an eye with hundreds of people interested in your content… and it’s free!

I call this exploiting because lets face it, you are completely manipulating both the Twitter system and, well, your own friends. But as long as we are making connections (and money), who really cares?

The eventual goal here is to have all the people that you “followed” follow you right back, and in my experience about 1/3 of them will. This means that they will be reading your content and checking up on your status. Sure, you’ll have about 3:1 following-to-followers, but as long as you are expanding that all important consumer base… no one’s the wiser. ;)

Let’s recap. You can gain hundreds of targeted, active and interested readers by tapping into other blogger’s followers with Twitter. By opting to follow all of the readers of a blog in your niche, you are essentially casting a baited fishing pole and are bound to get about 30%-40% of those people to follow you back. Once that’s in tact, more and more people are going to see your content, your updates and whatever else you have to say. It’s a win-win, it’s easy and super effective!
